Alumroot (Heuchera richardsonii)

Purple bell shaped flowers hanging in a spike at the end of a long leafless flower stalk, perennial, 30 to 60 cm (12-24") tall, blooms June to July. Prefers moist to dry, well drained soil in full sun to shade. A good plant for a rock garden or a shade garden.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring or late fall. Gently press seeds into the soil and sprinkle lightly with soil.
Native Uses: Roots used in medicinal tea for treating diarrhea and cramps. Early settlers used alumroot to treat wounds, sores and ulcers.

Yellow flowers with dark centre, biennial, 30-45 cm (4-12") tall, blooms July to August. Will grow on any type of soil in full sun to light shade. Attactive cut flower. A good plant for a butterfly garden.

Attracts: Butterflies and birds.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring or late fall. Plant seeds 4 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep. Once established self seeds well.

Cut-Leaved Anemone (Anemone multifida)

White to light pink flowered perennial, 15-20 cm (6-20") tall, blooms late May and June, followed by a white, wooly seed head. Will grow in well drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
Planting Instructions: Seed in early spring or late fall. Sow seeds 4 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deept. Spread by roots and can become invasive so is best to contain this plant.
Pretreatment: None required.
Habitat: Grasslands, open woods, south facing slopes.

Dotted Blazingstar (Liatris punctata)

Perennial with rose to purple coloured blossoms, 20-60 cm (8-24") tall, blooms July to September. Will grow on moderately rich soils in full sun. Attractive ornamental and cut flower. A good plant for a butterfly garden.
Companions: Asters, Bergamot.
Attracts: Birds, butterflies and bees.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring (stratify) or late fall. Sow 4 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep. If grown in shade, becomes rampant and unruly with few inferior flowers.
Historical: Pulverized roots were eaten to improve appetite. Plant used for heart pain, swellings, stomach ache and bladder problems.

Attracts: Humming birds.
Planting Information: Seed outdoors from mid May to late fall. Plant 5 to 10 mm deep in a sunny location.
Germination: 5 to 10 days.
Habitat: Prairie meadows and hillsides.
Native Uses: The long tap root of Dotted Blazingstar was harvested in the spring, dried, and eaten during the winter. Boiled roots were also used to treat swellings.

For Kids Harebell

Blue bell shaped flowers, 10-45 cm tall, with short leaves on numerous slender stems, blooms June to September. Prefers sandy, well drained soil. Plant in full sun to partial shade.
Planting Instructions: The seeds are extremely small (1 million seeds per gram) therefore the seed needs to be mixed with sand to help spread the seeds for planting. Scatter seed on soil surface in early June.
Historical: The Cree chopped and dried the roots to make them into compresses to stop bleeding and reduce swelling.

Bright yellow flower petals surround a dark brown, column-like centre. The leaves are grayish green and hairy. The plant grows 30-60 cm tall. It blooms from July to September. This plant is very drought tolerant.
Planting Information: Seed from mid-May to late fall. Plant 5 to 10 mm deep in a sunny location.
Germination: 5-15 days.
Habitat: Dry grassland and coulee bottoms.
Native Uses: The dried roots can be used to make a yellow dye.

Rose coloured flowers, hanging from the stem in threes. Grows 15-45 cm tall. Blooms May to July. Produces feathery gray seed heads that look like an old man's whiskers. Grow in full sun.
Planting Information: Seed in early June or late fall. Sow seeds 5 mm deep. Plant in full sun to light shade.
Historical: RIpe seeds crushed for perfume.

For Kids Yarrow

At the tip of each stem many small white flowers crowd together to form a flower cluster. Leaves are fern like. Grows 50 to 70 cm tall. Blooms from June to September. Drought tolerant.
Planting Information: Seed from mid May to late fall. Plant 4 to 6 mm deep.
Germination: 5 to 15 days.
Seed Size: 5,500 to 6,100 seeds per gram.
Seed Dispersal: The light seeds of Yarrow allows for dispersal near the plant with wind aiding dispersal up to five meters.
Habitat: Dry to moist grassland.
Native Uses: The crushed leaves of yarrow were wrapped around wounds to help stop bleeding. Yarrow tea is used to treat coughs and sore throats. Yarrow leaves can be rubbed on skin to repel mosquitoes.
Wildlife Uses: European Starlings place yarrow leaves in their nests to keep insects away.

Gaillardia (Gaillardia aristata)

Yellow-orange flowers with red center, perennial, 20-60 cm (8-24") tall, blooms July and August. Will grow on well drained soil in full sun. Excellent for meadows, xeriscaping and cut-flowers.
Companions: Blue Flax, Bergamot, and Prairie Coneflower.
Planting Information: Seed in early June or late fall. Press the seeds onto the soil surface and do not cover them.
Germination: 5-10 days.
Seed Size: 450 seeds per gram.
Native Uses: Tea made from gaillardia used to relieve menstral problems.

Giant Hyssop (Agatache foeiculum)

Blue to violet flowers, perennial, 30-90 cm (12-36") tall, blooms in July and August. It has a camphor like odor. Will grow on well drained soils in full sun to partial shade. Good for lower hedges. Can be used in floral arrangements.
Attracts: Bees and butterflies.
Planting Instructions: Seed in early June or late fall. Sow seeds 4 to 6 mm (1/8'0 deep in rows 1 foot apart.

Yellow flowers, perennial, 15 to 60 cm tall, blooms mid-July to September. Will grow on poor to good soils in full sun. Very easy to start from seed. Forms patches up to 30 cm in diameter.

Harebell (Campanula rotundifola)

Purple to blue bell shaped flowers, perennial, 10-45 cm (4-18") tall, with short basal leaves on numerous slender stems, blooms June to Semptember. Prefers sandy, well drained soils with average moisture and full sun to partial shade.
Companions: Yarrow, Golden Bean, and Tufted Fleabane.
Planting Instructions: Seeds are extremely small (1 million seeds per gram) therefore the seed should be mixed with a light carrier to help disperse the seeds. Scatter seed on soil surface in early June.

Pink to liliac flower heads arranged in a spike, perennial, 30 to 76 cm (12-30") tall, blooms July and August. Grows on moist well drained soil in full sun. Takes three years to bloom. Use in a butterfly or rock garden.
Attracts: Butterflies and bees.
Planting Information: Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Sow shallowly, 3 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep.
Native Uses: Roots were mashed and made into tea to cure a variety of ailments.
Wildlife: Goldfinches eat the seeds of blazingstar.

Nothern Hedysarum (Hedysarum boreale)

Attracts: Bees and deer (forage).
Planting Information: Seed in spring or late fall. For spring planting, scarify seeds by soaking in warm water 12-24 hours before planting. Sow seeds 4 to 6 mm (1/4-1/2") deep.

Yellow flowers with brown-black centre, perennial, 30-60 cm (12-24") tall, blooms July to September. Will grow in most soils in full sun. A good plant for a water conserving garden or a butterfly garden.

Prairie Crocus (Anemone patens)

Blue to purple flowered perennial, 10-30 cm (4-12") tall, blooms mid-April to June. Grows on sandy loam soils in full sun to very light shade. Slow to establish, taking up to 7 years to bloom. Floral emblem of Manitoba.
Attracts: Goldfinches.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring (stratify for 1-3 weeks) or late fall. Press seeds into soil just enough to establish good contact and sprinkle lightly with soil. May take two to three years to germinate. Seedlings take two to three years to mature. If started indoors, keep in flats for first year and transplant to permanent location in the second year.
Historical: Sepals used to stop nosebleeds; crushed leaves applied externally to relieve rheumatism.

Purple Clematis (Clematis occidentalis)

Pale puple flower, blooms May to June, climbing reddish stem vine that attaches to other plants. Prefers shade.
Planting Information: Seed in spring or late fall. Sow seeds 4 to 6 mm (1/4-1/2") deep.
Habitat: Shade, moist riverine woods, open dry woods, thickets.
Other Names: Blue Clematis, Purple Virgin's-Bower. The Blackfoot called this plant stookatsis (ghost's lariat).
Note: The whole plant is toxic if swallowed and the sap is a skin irritant.

Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpureum)

Purple to red coloured flowers, perennial, grows up to 40 cm (16") tall, blooms July to September. This plant is a nitrogen fixing legume. Excellent for xeriscapping.
Attracts: Bees and beetles.
Planting Information: Scarify seeds by soaking in hot water (80 C) for 24 hours, then moist chill seeds for 10 days before sowing in spring. Plant 5 to 10 mm deep.
Germination: 3 to 5 days.
Seed Size: 300-500 seeds per gram.
Habitat: Dry grassland and coulee bottoms.
Native Uses: The leaves of Purple Prairie Clover were boiled and used to treat wounds. Tea made from root was used to treat hay fever.

Rhombic-Leaved Sunflower (Helianthus laetiflorus)

Flowers with yellow petals and brown center, perennial, 30 to 120 cm (12-48") tall , blooms August to September. Grows in dry areas in full sun. Can be aggressive so contain area or plant with plenty of competition.
Attracts: Birds.
Planting Information: Seed in early June or late fall. Sow 4 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep. Seeds have a low germination rate.
Habitat: Prairie meadows and hillsides.

Scalet Paintbrush (Castilleja miniata)

Red flowered perennial, 30-60 cm (12-24") tall, blooms, July to August. Will grow in poorer soils in full sun. May difficult to get established--said to be parasitic on roots of other perennials. Very showy and attractive plant.
Planting Information: Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Sow seeds thickly, 4 to 6mm (1/8-1/4") deep.
Legend: When an Indian brave needed bright colours for a sunset painting, the Great Sprit handed him brightly coloured dripping paintbrushes. They were thrown away when the painting was done and where they fell paintbrushes grew.

Scarlet Mallow (Sphaeralcea coccinea)

Bring orange to brick red flower, perennial, 15-20 cm (6-8") tall, blooms May to July. Grows in dry, sandy soils. Good for xeriscaping. Is the only member of the mallow family that is native to the prairies.
Planting Information: Seeds should be scarified and covered with soil when planted.
Habitat: Disturbed, sunny and dry sites with sandy soil.

Slender Blue Beardtongue (Penstemon procerus)

Deep blue violet flowers in a dense spike, perennial, 15 to 45 cm (6-18") tall, blooms May to June. Will grow in any soil type in full sun. Suitable for a rock garden or as a ground cover.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring (stratify) or late fall. Press seed into the soil and cover just enough to ensure good contact with the soil. Germinations rates are low. Will not bloom until the second year. Removing faded flowers will encourage a second bloom in August or September.
Native Uses: The Navajo treated rattlesnake bites with the leaves of some Penstemon species.

Three-Flowered Avens (Geum triflorum)

Nodding flowers, usally in threes, with reddish to purplish sepals and rose coloured petals, perennial, 15-45 cm (6-18") tall, blooms May to July. Seeds heads are a gray feathery achene that persists throughout mid-summer. Ideal for xeriscaping.
Planting Information: Seed in early June (strarify) or late fall. Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/3" deep. Plant in full sun to light shade.
Uses: Spray dried fruit stalks with fixative for dried floral arrangements.

White flowered, perennial, grows 1 to 3 feet tall, blooms July to September. Needs full sun to partial shade. This plant is a nitrogen fixing legume. Excellent for a butterfly garden or a cut flower garden.

Germination: 5 to 12 days.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Plant Characteristics: White blossomed ferny looking perennial, 50-70 cm (20-28") tall, blooms June to September. Grows bes in light soils with dry to moist conditions in full sun. Can be aggresive so is bes to contain. Forms conlonies up to 60 cm (24") in diameter. Drought tolerant. Excellent for erosion control. Good for dried floral arrangements.
Companions: Asters.
Planting Information: Seed in early spring or late fall. Sow seeds sparingly on surface of soil and keep moist until germination.

Yellow Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis)

Yellow flowered biennial, 50 to 150 cm (20-60") tall, blooms July to September. Blooms from evening to sunrise. Will grow in nearly any dry, sunny location. Excellent plant for a butterfly garden.
Attracts: Moths and other nocturnal insects.
Planting Information: Seed in early June (stratify) or late fall. Sow 4 to 6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep. Transplants easily. Spreads rapidly if allowed to disperse.
Historical: Used to heal wounds and as an antispasmodic. Source of omega 3.
